The Doomsday Festival 1999 was in the "Junge Garten" which is a kind of amphitheatre beautifully situated in the "Grosse Garten, the city park of Dresden. After a few rain showers in the morning it remained dry for the rest of the day. After having seen gothic rock acts like Dreadful Shadows, Clan of Xymox and more dance orientated rock from Think About Mutation and Tanzwut (COOL!!!) it was time for the first highlight of the day: Moonspell. They played a way too short set with songs from all their albums, including Wolfheart and from their new album "The Butterfly Effect" Those songs were very much in the vein of Sin Pecado so I'm looking forward to it.
After Moonspell it was time for two of Germany's most renounced gothic acts, Deine Lakeien and Project Pitchfork. No guitars there but I liked PP, it seemed the public that consisted largely of real goths (oder grufties auf Deutsch) liked these two bands most…
After a long pause with typical German music (not the kind suited for a gothic festival!! Guess a little joke from Peter), it was time for Type O Negative. After 2 years it was about time they showed up again. The advance CD for World Coming Down was in the car CD player (finallly) and we listened several times on our way to Dresden (an 8 hour trip) so we were hoping for an Everyone I love is Dead or a Green Light or a World Coming Down or a White Slavery or anything new…
Type O started off with Cinnamon Girl followed by a total surprise: Back in the USSR!!! It seemed that a lot of people could not appreciate this (Dresden is in the very eastern part of Germany, way behind the former Iron Curtain and suffered over 40 years of Sovjet communism)?!?!? At least we got a lot more space to move and it was easy to get up front :-] After Back in the USSR it was time for the good ol' Type O tunes Too late:Frozen, Wolf Moon, In Praise of Bacchus, Gravity, MGG. High hopes were raised when they started off with the first chords of Jesus Hitler but they moved over to Kill All the White People, of course JH would be even more provocative than Back in the USSR but I wish, I wish, I wish…
The songs from the new album were limited to Everything Dies (the first single from World Coming Down) and the second Beatles song of the evening: Day Tripper. Peter told us that they only had time till midnight or else the Polizei would come to take them away but there was still time for two encores: Love You to Death and Schwarz Nummer Eins.
And that was it! It was a great show (the sound was clear and at high volume, lights were mostly green except for Josh who preferred pink) and I'm looking forward to see them again soon (preferably in Holland)
