Well, the party's over. I must say, I come away from last nights show a bit disquieted. Reville (sp?) a local band, was great! Deftones were cool, Sponge was so-so....they were a bit to "ballady" for the crowd.....but the one thing that set these 3 bands apart from Type O was the vocal-audio....at least I could hear the singers clear as a bell, even if I could not really understand what they were saying.....I don't know who the hell was in charge of TON's sound....but they should be flayed alive, hung drawn and quartered! I could not hear the vocals at ALL! Nothing.....it was all instrumental and only a hint of Kenny or Pete here and there! It was ridiculous! At least I know all the words so I supplied my own vocals....but I find it really hard to take that the major act of the evening had such poor quality sound! Last yrs show at the Avalon was so much different...you could hear the vocals so much better. I can't beleive that somehow TON went thru their whole set without someone at the sound board waking up and noticing that HELLO! no vocals!
The other thing that caught my attention is the feeling I got of reluctance, I just really got the feeling that they did not want to be there, that they were not happy at all...there was no audience banter whatsoever, like you know "Hello Boston how ya doing" nothing, they came on they played and they left....like they were performing an unpleasant chore and they wanted to get it over with quickly! It really disturbs me.....I was not even able to get backstage which completly bummed me out....
The songs they sang were mostly from OR except the standard Halloweenish songs, Christian Woman and Black #1 and also We hate everyone....the crowd itself was not too helpful....being that it was a radio station winners only bash not everyone there was necessarily a TON fan....so the audience participation with lyrics (like the refrain from Black #1) was not what it would have been if it was an actual TON show and ppl bought tickets to see THEM! The people standing next to me had never even HEARD of TON! I dunno, I wish I could shake this feeling that the guys were not overly happy about the whole affair, but I have a feeling they were not happy and it showed! Don't get me wrong I LOVE TON and the opportunity to see them is awesome and I am so glad I was able to, but I almost felt like it was anti-climactical that my enthusiasm was not shared by a good part of the crowd, nor by the band themselves! I'll be interested to see the reviews from the Phila. show, as that is a ticketed event, and see if it differs or not from my take on the whole thing! SHIT I wish I could have talked to the guys to see what was up....
