I wanted to give you a bit more info on the 10/30/98 show, since I was
there. It was a "win tickets only" show which means that most of the people
at the show were not Type O fans, and were incredibly drunk and in Halloween
costumes. I was personally assaulted by a 10 foot wide marijuana leaf (?).
Type O didn't go on until nearly midnight, and came onstage in latex
zombie masks. Each was slightly different, and I later learned, had been
molded to each members face. Kenny's had a torn-out throat, Josh's had
a brow ring, Johnny's had teeth (and made him look distressingly like a
mummified Marilyn Manson) and Peter's was, well, just plain scary! There
were open wounds all over the face, and when he opened his mouth to sing,
stage blood poured out of his mouth, and ran down his shirt. He also had
his teeth painted to look as if they were rotted. Everyone wore long sleeves,
except for Josh, but his arms matched his face....blue-green! Peter's forearms
and hands were painted green and mottled with black....his bass was very
colorful by the end of the show; shreds of green stuff hanging from every
string.
The sound was dreadful. For the first 2 songs, all you could
hear was drums and bass, no vocals, no guitar, no keyboards. The soundman
at The Roxy should've been shot in the alley out back. Things were slowly
fixed, but the sound was still very muddy for the entire show.
They opened with "Love You To Death," which was truly horrifying to
the female fans...the makeup wasn't too well received by the girls, and
a lot of them were slightly depressed by the blood. The girl standing next
to me was practically in tears- 1) She couldn't see Peter's face, and 2)
He was wearing a baggy long-sleeved sweatshirt, instead of his usual tight
t-shirt or muscle shirt.
The rest of the set was pretty much SOP, although VERY short.
They barely played an hour, and performed no encore. There was little chatter
between songs, except for Peter pausing to say, "We thought we'd perform
WITHOUT our usual makeup, this time....." One surprise was a thrash version
of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" with Kenny belting
out the chorus at high velocity.
It was nice to see the boys, but they didn't seem very happy to be
there, except for Johnny, who never seems to be anything BUT happy. There
was a moment of complete musical confusion, when everyone got a bit lost
in the song, except for Johnny. He kept pounding away until everyone got
their bearings again.....I would not have wanted to be on the receiving
end of the glare that Peter threw to the rest of the band.
There were two more shows after the Roxy. October 31st in Philadelphia, PA and November 5th in NYC. I saw some photos from the NY show on another TON website...the masks were looking pretty ragged by then!
That's about it......thought you might like a bit more info.
