Review of the Type O Negative show in Ft. Lauderdale FL

By: Steve

Well after taking a few wrong turns here and there, myself and three of my friends finally found the club. It looked like it was a good thing that it was an all ages show because more than half of the crowd were kids. We met a guy in line who said about half an hour (7:00) before we got there Type O was on the bus giving out beer and Pete's girlfriend was there. He had his ticket signed by Josh and Johnny.

After a quick walkaround the club and hitting the T-shirt stand, which is also cool cause if you by a Stuck Mojo shirt you get a CD. Finally Drain came on. The drummer walked out first too many whistles and cheers from the mostly male crowd that had assembled up front. The band plays (it looked like) Drop D tuning and heavy grungy riffs as well as up to three part vocal harmonizing. There was an occasional small pit going but me and my friends were too busy staring at the drummer to move.

After their six or seven song set. There's quite a wait as the club plays Whitesnake and AC/DC, although the Stuck Mojo bassist came out and started headbanging a bit and doing the devil sign during Back in Black.

Mojo came on after an intro about band wagon jumping and how there is no originality in today's music. The band was already out going into one of many brutal riffs when the singer jumped out. Pit action was crazy for

Mojo and everyone was getting into their shit. The bassist a very big guy in a beelzebub shirt did the hardcore chants while the guitarist did some deathmetal grunts. When the guitar player took a solo he looked like he was doing some Zakk Wylde moves.

Sometime towards the end of their set the singer pulled a friend from the crowd and had him sing with the band. The second to lost song the singer dedicated to all the users who are sick of alternative and they played a verse of the Twisted Sister's Were Not Gonna Take It. They played on more song and called it a night. All of us breathless we made it to the back and sat down.

In this time we saw all of the little miss scare alls and such make it towards the front. After a few minutes the Glass Walls of Limbo started up. Johnny got on stage first and everyone saw and went wild. Then came Josh who just stared into the crowd. Finally it got underway and the started off by playing Prelude To Agony.

After Pete thanked the crowd he told us that there was enough of his bullshit and went into Love You To Death. The song was great but Type O's live sound is very muddied and sometimes the keys would get drowned out or sometimes guitar. This next one was written by Mr. Neil Young, Pete sayed before doing Cinnamon Girl. After that he was saying something like, "with out self pity, I would have no pity." which was the introduction to In Praise of Bacchus.

Right after I think they played the Dazed and Confused bassline for a minute before Pete said, "This was written in 1967 by Jim Morrison." It was a very good light my fire cover, which I had never heard before. After the song he said there was no comparision between him and Jim Morrison. A familiar face jumped on stage, it was the Mojo singer and the guitarist. Pete turns to his left and says, "Ah shit, it's the NAACP" (the singer is black in case you did not know). This meant only one thing Kill all the White users. The Mojo guitar player was going nuts, as he did before, in front of Johnny's set. The singer sang a line and let the crowd sing the next. After the song Pete told the singer to put some shoes on.

Pete told the crowd the next song was about suicide, "If you're gonna go, take someone you hate with you." Gravity was the next song which not too many users knew but it was still great. The changeover to the next song was quick with no chat in between but we all recognized the keyboard intro of Christian Woman and all the users there were going nuts. It was done really good tonight. After the song Pete made a reference to women and said,"It's been said that there is a time when not to have sex with women (or something like that), but I found that a little blood should never come between friends. Wolf Moon, maybe my favorite song of the night. Then was Too Late, and during the middle of the song came down the snowflakes. Between parts in the song Pete played the Aqualung riff and then the Smoke on the Water riff. The snow that came down on Kenny was then shifted at the crowd but I was too far back cause I was so tired from Mojo.

Being that there was not much time left the next song was a giveaway as the played their worst song MGG, but nonethless it went over well with the crowd. Pete said something about Ozzy so I figured they'd play POMM but then the closed with Black No.1.

For such an under promoted show the place was well packed and I was surprised to see so many users there. It ended around 1:00 and was one hell of a show, if you miss these guys you must be on crack. Also see Mojo even if you don't like rap the grooves will get you up and moshing, like it did with me. And as for Drain the were pretty good, I think one of there kids was there or something. I was surprised that Type O did not play Summer Breeze or Blood and Fire or Druidess, but it still fucking rocked.

Set List: (maybe out of order in places)
