Review of the Type O Negative show in Lawrence, KS

By: darian@gvi.net

I've been on this list for nearly 10 months and remained relatively silent, but since I finally got to see TON in concert, I'll share my experience. The concert itself was absolutely yummy. I wore a black pushup bra, black lace bodystocking, black combat boots, tiny black fake leather skirt, black leather collar and chain, black leather jacket, and a spider web painted on my face. I do this on occasion release the tensions of working in a law office and taking too damn many classes.

Manhole played first and they rocked. Life of Agony was okay. I met about 15 friends there by surprise, so a bunch of us went outside during LOA's set. A friend and I hung out by the tour buses and talked to users. There were some girls waiting there who said Peter was still on the bus - they'd been there for hours to see him come out. There was this big tombstone-shaped metal mailbox by the bus and when my friends returned they helped me up onto it. I was there straddling this big mailbox in my skimpy attire when Peter came out. He was absolutely massive! I started quivering and couldn't stop. A guy friend went up to Peter and asked him to help me down. He lifted me down and oh gods I nearly melted. Yeah, I'm a little groupie. I had my thighs around Peter Steele.

I'd been dancing the whole night, but when Type O- started, I was mesmerized. They were awesome, despite the fact that Peter had a cold and didn't play the whole set. I bodysurfed and at one point, during Christian Woman, I was lying flat above the crowd, held up right in front of Peter like an offering, just this figure clad in black lace. One guy friend proposed to his girlfriend in the middle of "Love You to Death". It was cool.

After the show, we went back to the buses and waited with masses of users until they came out to sign autographs. A few of us went to the front and spent a few hours talking to Peter while he signed. A female friend of mine was being a total groupie and lifted up her shirt and asked him to sign her chest. He looked at her oddly, but did it, so I went up too. I'd been talking a lot with him, so when I offered him my chest, he's like, "You know, you've really got to get over this modesty problem." He was a really cool guy, good sense of humor. I got the back of my black leather jacket signed in silver paint pen.

I'd also neglected to bring a camera, so when I realized we'd be hanging with Peter for more than a minute, I grabbed a guy friend and told him to go to the nearest 24hr store, get one of those cheap disposable cameras and come back as soon as humanly possible. He was back in 15 minutes. We got some great shots; in one he's holding me like a bride over the threshold and another. . . well, my groupie friend asked for a picture of him kissing her, which he begrudgingly posed for, and when I asked her later, she said, no, she didn't actually get to kiss him. After she did that, I wanted one too, and for the 10 seconds they were setting up the shot, I actually got to kiss him. Not passionately, but a kiss with Peter Steele left me numb nontheless. No, I don't sound like a groupie at all ;-}

The most mortifying and most spectacular part of the evening was when all my friends, knowing my virginity status and my lust for the Man of Steele, decided I must tell him of this. They shoved me up there and said, "She's got something to tell you." I was like, umm, no I don't. Things were going cool, I didn't want to embarass him or me by saying something stupid. Then they blurt out, "She's a virgin. She's been saving herself for you." Oh gods. . .
He looks at me like 'what the f__k??' and says, "Well, I'm really flattered, but don't you want to save yourself for someone who's going to care about you and be there in the morning?" That was very cool because it let me know that he doesn't just bed groupies. (Or not all of them;-}) Then he stops and was like, "Is that true?" I said, "Well, it's true I'm a virgin, but I wasn't saving myself for some ideal of a rock star. It'd be a great way to lose it, but I didn't come back here for that. I just want to hang out." He seemed pretty relieved when I said that and said he would definitely like that. I told him I was going to be in NY for the show in Long Island Nov. 1, so he gave me his manager's ph# and said to get guest passes and come see him. Everyone around was trying get the #, but I was the only one. I've since called and they were bitchy about it, but I have two passes for after the show. I'll probably post something after that show, too. Any ideas of what I should wear?
